DUTIES:
This
position is in Surgical Services of the Veterans Administration Montana
Healthcare System located in Billings, MT.
·
Functioning
as primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and
equipment during surgical procedures
·
Setting
up sterile field with required items
·
Planning
and discussing each procedure with surgical professionals
·
Assuring
supplies and equipment are available prior to surgical procedures
·
Preparing,
organizing, and maintaining complex surgical set ups
·
Observing
and responding to the needs of the surgeon during procedures
·
Utilizing
universal precautions
·
Following
infection control policies and procedures
·
Assisting
team members with patient care
·
Handling specimens
·
Assisting
with procedures as neces! sary
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
REQUIRES:
One (1) year of specialized experience as an operating room assistant or
surgical technician that includes: knowledge of medical instruments, human
anatomy, physiology and aseptic techniques; knowledge of surgical/operating
room procedures; knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures; performing
proper postoperative decontamination procedures;
assisting the surgeon and/or surgical team
during procedures; scrubbing for a variety of surgical procedures; preparing
surgical set-ups; positioning and preparing patients for procedures; knowledge
of medical terminology; handling and operating a variety of instruments and
equipment; applying sterile techniques and following universal precautions.
Experience must be equival! ent to at least the GS-05 grade level in Federal
service. To receive credit for these skills, they must be documented in your
resume.
OR
SUBSTITUTION
OF EDUCATION: Six (6) months of graduate education leading to a master's degree
from an accredited institution in a major or field directly related to this
position. Transcripts are required.
OR
COMBINATION:
A combination of specialized experience and related graduate education that
demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. To calculate
the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience
you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level.
Then determine the amount of education you
have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
Only education in excess of the amount
required for the next lower grade level is qualifying.
Add the two percentages; the total percentage
must equal at lea! st 100% to qualify for the grade level. Your experience must
be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

of aseptic techniques and principles of practices

of patient care procedures and scrub assistance

of surgical instrumentation, care and maintenance
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The
work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular
and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning
patients, or similar activities.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/o! r education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position inclu! ding all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group.
