POSITION : Dental Assistant - Two Vacancies - Full-time, Permanent, GS-681. The position is located in the Dental Service, Department of Veterans Affairs, Billings Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), Billings! , MT. Tour of duty: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM for Salary will be determined by a professional standards board and will be dependent upon experience and education.

DUTIES : The incumbent works as a chair-side assistant primarily assisting in general dentistry. Incumbent may assist as needed in more complex specialized dental procedures such as oral surgery, prosthetics, operative, and endodontics. Duties include making appointments, preparation of the patient for treatment, preparation of instruments, preparation and manipulation of materials, aspiration of blood and secretions, instrument tra! nsfer, and cleanup of the instruments and work area at the end of the p! rocedure.. Incumbent must be familiar with exposing digital radiographs both intraoral and extraoral (panoramic) x-rays, taking additional exposures as required and accomplishes routine equipment maintenance and general housekeeping duties. Other duties may include: Receiving, scheduling, referring and contacting employees, patients and others outside of the VA; maintaining a calendar and record of all appointments; directing patients or visitors and referring callers to appropriate staff members based on specific request or by ascertaining the nature of the call.
Physical Requirements: Pre-employment physical is required. Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs), moderate carrying (15-44 lbs), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, repeated bending, both legs required, ability for rapid 18" Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other eye, emotional stability, mental s! tability, sitting 3-4 hours intermittently, hand and eye coordination, and twisting
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS : U.S. Citizen. Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience : Applicants must have six (6) months experience that demonstrates the applicantÂ's ability to perform the work of dental assistant, or provides a familiarity with that type of work. OR
Education : Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental AssociationÂ's Commission on Accreditation that included a course in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality; radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting; or practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accrediting body.
Certification : Pu! blic Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedure! s meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
- Alternative Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: (a) Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.; OR (b) Successful completion of the education and training, including course work in radiation health and safety, described by OPM as fully qualifying (copies of certificates of successful completion plus transcripts or course descriptions of required subjects are required); OR (c) Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Se! cretary for Health for Dentistry. The Chief, Dental Service will certify competency based on documentation of successful completion of this training, a copy of which will be filed on record.
In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met when determining grade level:
GS-4: One (1) year of experience at the next lower level, OR 2 years of education above high school that included completion of a dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental AssociationÂ's Commission on Accreditation.
GS-5: At least one (1) year experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies at that level. This is the full performance level.

6. Basic knowledge of computerized dental record and privacy requirements related to the maintenance and restriction of release of information from the record.
7. Basic knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards for clinical and laboratory operations.
