Must possess the skills and abilities to engage in the nursing process including but not limited to the assessment, nursing analysis, planning, nursing intervention and evaluation in the promotion and maintenance of the patient's health across the continuum of life. Must have the skills needed to supervise and delegate appropriate functions to subordinate personnel. Must have the skills/abilities to evaluate and ensure that the medical plan of care is carried out. Must have the educational, physical and mental capabilities to perform procedures common to their nursing unit. Must complete department specific competency validation checklists within four (4) month probationary perio! d or as designated per topic.
Job Title Specific -! Perioperative RN (Circulator):
This RN plans, delivers, and evaluates nursing care for patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during surgical or other invasive procedures. Standards of Practice crucial to this role are assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, health teaching, consultation, evaluation, quality of practice, professional education,collegiality, collaboration, ethics, research, resource utilization, and leadership. The RN works collaboratively with other perioperative professionals (eg, surgeons, anesthesia care providers, surgical technologists, nursing aides) to meet patient needs and is accountable for the patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided during the surgical or invasive procedure. Possessing clinical knowledge, judgment, and critical-thinking skills based on evidenced principles, the perioperative nurse plans and implements n! ursing care to address the physical and behavioral/spiritual of the patient while continuously monitoring safety during surgical or invasive procedure - all of this is based on the AORN PNDS Perioperative Patient Focused Model. The perioperative nurse has a goal to advocate for patients, their families, and significant others in order to achieve a level of wellness equal to or greater than that which they had before the procedure. This RN may delegate certain patient care tasks to suitably trained and competent allied health providers and assistive personnel as determined by BDH and professional Standards of Care outlined by AORN, but retains accountability for the outcome of perioperative nursing care. At minimum, one RN Circulator should be dedicated to each patient, as there is nothing more paramount and important to the RN as the patient.
This RN may also function in the Scrub role - as determined by incoming skills and abilities, or through orientation via BDH! Surgical Services. Either will be evaluated or guided by AORN standard! s of the RN Scrub.
