You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
This position is located within the Surgical Services Department of the VA Montana, Health Care System, Fort Harrison, Montana. The Surgical Technician is a member of the surgical team who provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during! surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician, under the general supervision of the surgical team, will participate in the planning and implementation of complex procedures. Duties include but may not be limited to the following:
- Functions as primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as; major and minor vascular, ophthalmology, major and minor orthopedic, urology, and general surgeries.
- Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, endoscopy equipment, and other operating room supplies.
- Plans each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
- Prepares, organizes and maintains complex sterile set-ups.
- Observes and responds to each stage of the procedure a! nd the surgeon's needs by maintaining a high level of concentration for! extended periods of time.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: working ! in a hospital or medical facility as part of an operating room team; performing scrub duties for a variety of complex surgical procedures (i.e., general, vascular, orthopedic, etc.); anticipating the needs of the surgeon; maintaining highly complex sterile surgical setups; and following all universal precautions regarding infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment. A full year of work is considered to be 35- 40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required ): Successful completion of (6) months of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the posit! ion to be filled? This education must have been obtained in an accredit! ed college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information can not be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of aseptic techniques and the principles of practices.
Knowledge of basic patient care procedures to provide scrub! assistance in surgery suite.
Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and care and maintenance of the same.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and repositioning patients. The physical demands of the position involve long, strenuous hours of standing, stooping, bending, and stretching without a break during procedures, which require intense concentration. The work also involves frequent lifting to position or transport impaired patients and requires strenuous physical exertion.

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
