Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

Must pass pre-employment examination.

DUTIES:
The registered nurse provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed provider.

Board certification from a VA-approved certifying body preferred.

Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Applies evidence based practice to care delivery. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.

Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences.

Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.

Influenc! es care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary! team.

Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives, as well as customer service programs.

In the Outpatient Surgery department, specific duties include but are not limited to:

A.

Planning care for the Veteran presenting for an appointment to the Outpatient Surgical area. This may include clarification and notification of related pre-appointment testing and procedures, compiling and/or ordering per protocol test and procedural results.

B.

Preparing the Veteran and significant others for the peri-operative experience through pre-operative education on pertinent information regarding processes, diagnoses, and procedures.

C.

Respond to Veteran phone calls and inquiries pertaining to surgical pre-op and post-op issues.

D.

Assist Surgeons with minor procedures in the Outpatient Surgery clinic area! .

E.

Perform suture/staples and cast removal as per the Surgeons direction.

F.

Collaborate with Scheduling, Surgeons, ancillary departments, and other nursing staff to maintain clinic processes and flow, advocating for patient centered care.

G.

Collaborate with Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, and VeteranÂ's Health and Education Committee to develop and continue to update appropriate pre and post-operative patient education materials.

H.

Provide post-biopsy and post-procedure discharge instructions for those receiving care in the Surgical Outpatient clinic.

I.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accredi! ting agency

and

accredited by one of the following ac! crediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia

. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Must be proficient in spoken and written English

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level! of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse! I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years! of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
