Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program; or equivalent military surgical technologist program
Certified Surgical Technologist, CST
1-3 years surgical technologist experience in acute care operating room
Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team providing surgical care to patients. Surgical Technologists function in the role of scrub person. Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of the surgeon and the R.N. to ensure that the O.R. environment is safe, equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Must possess expertise in the theory and application of surgical technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate safe care of the patient during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist role requires extended periods of standing, lifting heavy instrumentation, and potential exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens.
Maintenance of strict aseptic technique.
Demonstrates knowledge and judgement in meeting the needs of the surgical patient.
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills.
Continues with self improvement & learning as related to the O.R. department's function.
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
Scrubs, gowns, & gloves appropriately.
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, solutions needed for procedure.
Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to operation and at appropriate intervals per policy.
Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
Helps in draping the sterile field.
Passes instruments, etc. to surgeon/assistant during procedure.
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
Prepares sterile dressings.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Assists other member of team with terminal cleaning of room.
Assists with prepping room for the next patient.
Assists with 2nd circulator duties as delegated by RN circulator.
