DUTIES:
The incumbent requires the ability to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) within the Surgical Services of VA Montana HCS, [mainly] located at the Fort Harrison campus. This nurse primarily functions in the role of Â"scrubÂ" nurse and Â"circulatorÂ" in the Operating Room (OR), providing care to adult and elderly Veterans undergoing local, minor, and intermediate surgical procedures. The position also requires competency to support nursing roles in Endoscopy, Special Procedures, Same Day Surgery, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, and the Outpatient Surgery department as assigned. Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Conscious Sedation certifications are required. The RN must be knowledgeable of AORN standards, applicable VHA Directives and performance measures. He/She is responsible to function within the assigned duties as a team leader, team member, preceptor to new employees and students as well as cross-training other staff. Additional assignments include assisting with staff development, patient education, and applying evidence based practice to unit specific processes.
Accountable to: The Surgical Staff Nurse is accountable to his/her designated Nurse manager for the completion of his/her assignment, the quality of care given, and the display of professional behavior. This nurse is responsible to the Associate Director, Patient Care Services for ensuring Standards of patient Care and Nursing Practice are supported.
Selected individual will be required to be available "on-call" on a rotational basis. Because of this "on-call" requirement, selectee must be located within 30 minutes of the VA Facility.

Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia . The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
Educational requirements can be met as follows:
(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR
(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR
(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The following requirements are preferred for this position:
At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality. This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

Salary determination will be based on a recommendation by the Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.

This position is in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status. Grade and salary will be based on a recommendation by the Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.
VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
